Unlikely Friendships: The Cutest Mismatched Animal Pairs

Meet Fern the bunny and Kiggy the cat; siblings by adoption, friends by choice. Barely three months apart in age, my girls have grown up together and become the oddest pair over the years. Moments are few and far between where they aren’t snuggling, grooming each other, racing around, or otherwise terrorizing my apartment together. Fern isn’t caged like most rabbits which helps to eliminate power imbalances, given the natural predator-prey relationship they share. The only real power imbalance between the two is Kiggy’s constant hogging of the comfiest spot on the cat tower.

Despite being completely mismatched, Kiggy and Fern remain the best of friends. But they aren’t the only strange duo! Animals everywhere are making friends in the unlikeliest places. Check out some of the cutest mismatched pairs on social media and get ready to have your heart strings pulled!

Zoe and Bailey

When you think of friendly pairs, dogs and cats probably don’t top your list. The phrase “fighting like cats and dogs” exists for a reason, but Zoe the French bulldog and her feline brother Bailey don’t let that get in the way of their lifelong friendship. From coordinating Halloween costumes to sunbathing together on lazy days, the two just can’t get enough of each other. Making interspecies friendships look easy, Zoe and Bailey’s owners described it best when they said, “Friendships (however unlikely) are never an accident.”

Moki, Frida, and Pandora

Moki the pitbull has found two tiny friends in her guinea pig sisters, Frida and Pandora. Despite being bite-sized compared to their doggy friend, Frida and Pandora don’t seem to be scared at all. They’re constantly climbing on their sister, who shows a superb amount of patience. Besides snoozing and lounging around together, the trio loves dressing up in matching holiday costumes. Given Moki’s gentle nature, the piggies are never short on kisses or cuddles. In the spirit of the Big Friendly Giant, teensy Frida and Pandora have found a friend for life.

Coaster and Buttercup

Everyone needs someone to lean on and Coaster the horse found exactly that in his best friend, Buttercup the goat. As a competitive show horse, Coaster was often left with severe anxiety. With no better cure than friendship, Buttercup was rescued from the meat industry to be Coaster’s constant companion. Nowadays, the two share a stall, the same taste for sweets, and are rarely seen apart when Coaster isn’t training. Buttercup loves lounging on Coaster’s back, and he doesn’t seem to mind! The two are so inseparable, their biggest arguments are over who gets the last gummy worm.

Callie and Stewart

After falling out of a tree as a baby, Stewart needed a rescuer. He got all that and then some in mini Aussie Shepard Callie. When Stewart was unable to return to the wild after his injury, Callie made sure there was more than enough room for him in her home. And though dogs and squirrels are typically rivals, these two enjoy each other’s company as if they weren’t even aware they were different species! Callie and Stewart frequently pose for pictures and enjoy warm California days. While Stewart occasionally tests Callie’s patience, as most siblings do, it’s nothing a bit of their favorite treat watermelon can’t fix.

Bentley and Lucy

Parakeets commonly click their tongues when they want to be friendly with someone. Handsome little Bentley can’t seem to stop tongue clicking around his pal Lucy the lionhead bunny. Besides hitching the occasional ride on Lucy’s back, Bentley also loves sharing leafy greens with his pal. Despite the species difference, the adventurous parakeet wants to do everything Lucy does. Bentley is constantly singing songs to his sister and inviting her to dance along with him. Though it’s not always so innocent…the two often encourage each other to steal food. Unlikely best friends are also unlikely partners in crime!

The best bonds are often formed by the most unexpected pair. Regardless of species, these animals have found best friends for life. So dog, cat, squirrel, goat, or anything in between, we all get by with a little help from our friends.
