5 Tips for Summer Pet Care
As we move into the warmer days of summer, it becomes a perfect time to get outside to enjoy the weather and get some much needed exercise. But summer can put your pets at more risk than you might think. The changing season presents some unique challenges to taking care of your pets, and it’s easy to find yourself unprepared to face them. Here are five ways you can help make sure both you and your pets avoid any problems this summer.
1. Manage the Heat
Like us, animals can find the hot summer sun uncomfortable after an extended period of time. But unlike us, most pets (particularly dogs) have a hard time managing all that excess heat. Make sure you keep an eye out on you furry friend this summer, as dehydration can be a major issue if not taken care of early. Make sure your pet has plenty of fresh, clean water, access to shade, and avoid being outside with them for too long during the hottest parts of the day. Also, completely avoid leaving your pet in a car during the summer as the heat can quickly become deadly!
2. Watch out for Insects
Another thing to be mindful of during the summer are insects that come out in force, such as ticks, mosquitoes and fleas. These can lead to all sorts of health problems for your pets, such as heartworm and lyme disease. To avoid this, make sure you talk to your veterinarian so he can prescribe protection. This is doubly important if you plan on taking your pet out into deep brush or woods, as there is an increased chance for these pests during the summer months. Remember that these pests can cause just as many problems for you as well!
3. Remember the Sunscreen
Some pets with short fur or exposed skin are at risk for sunburns, and just like for people, this can be a painful condition to suffer from. Worse, it can also put your pet at increased risk for cancer! To combat this, if your pet has short hair, exposed skin, or a clipped coat (popular for the hot summer months), make sure that you are treating him with sun block if you’ll be out in the direct sun for extended periods. Also make sure to get one formulated for dogs if you can, but baby sunscreen can work in a pinch!
4. Beware of Poisonous Items
While it’s always important to watch out for your animals safety, there is no better time to be vigilant than the summer since, as there are many things that can be harmful to your pets if ingested. Chocolate, antifreeze from overheated cars, and a whole variety of common flowers from tulips to daffodils can be dangerous if ingested. Make sure to keep an eye on your pet during these months to help make sure he avoids these dangerous substances.
It can be a joy to spend time at the pool or beach-side with your pet, but always remember to be aware of the dangers water can present to your pet, and keep a close eye on them. Pets can tire easily swimming in a large body of water, or get tangled up in ropes or obstacles. It might be worth it to consider purchasing a pet sized life preserver if you plan on taking your dog or cat on extended aquatic adventures to make sure your pet stays safe as you enjoy the water together!
