5 Dogs Best Suited to Apartment Life
Do you live in an urban area? If you do, chances are you might live in an apartment and may not have access to a backyard. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t be a dog owner! There are many dog breeds who would adjust well to living in an apartment with you and your family.
If you’d like to be a dog owner but don’t own a house, here are some examples of dogs best suited to apartment life!
1. Havanese
The Havanese are great if you’d like a companion dog! They are small, measuring 8.5-11.5 inches tall and on average tend to be about 7-13 pounds. They usually prefer to stay indoors with their owners and are quite intelligent. They have no special exercise needs, but they do need to be bathed every week, and can’t go without a bath for more than 3 weeks. They sport a double coat so their grooming needs are of top priority!
Fun Fact: They’re the national dog of Cuba!
2. Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is small and playful. They shed less than similar breeds so they’re great
for people with allergies and perfect if you don’t want to spend time cleaning up after them. Since they don’t shed their coats much, daily brushing is necessary to prevent mats. It is also recommended that they are bathed at least once a month. They’re little bundles of energy, so daily playtimes are recommended to keep them as active as possible!
Fun Fact: “Bichon Frise” is French, for “curly lapdog”!
3. Dachshund
Dachshunds are the smallest of the hound dog breeds. They are 8-9 inches tall at the shoulder and on average weigh 16-32 pounds. They like to be active indoors, and an
owner needs to be careful not to let them get too overweight. The extra weight isn’t good for their backs because their elongated body type makes them susceptible to slipped or herniated disks. They are intelligent so they tend to have independent but playful personalities.
Fun Fact: They were bred in Germany to hunt Badgers. “Dachshund” literally translates into “badger dog”!
4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are extremely affectionate. Their favorite things to do are cuddling and spending quality time with their owners. They don’t like being alone and are frequently used as therapy dogs because of their giving, and friendly nature. They are regularly 10-18 pounds and are anywhere from 11-13 inches tall. They are not particularly active, but do need at least 20 minutes of exercise per day.
Fun Fact: They’re named after King Charles II of England!
5. Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are very small, but what they lack in size they make up for in feistiness. They are usually 6-9 inches tall, and only weigh 3-6 pounds. They are fun-loving and enjoy
being around their owners, but they can be wary of strangers, so it’s recommended to supervise them in social settings. Their large personalities are loved by everyone, but they are not recommended for living in homes with children under the age of 8, as children may pose a risk to them due to their small size.
Fun Fact: The Chihuahua is the smallest of all purebred dogs!
