Before you take your dog hiking, consider these ten tips.
1. Consider your dog’s health: There may be some factors that prevent your dog from going hiking. Factors such as arthritis or simply not being as active can cause difficulties for your dog. Considering your dog’s health can help avoid injury. If you need a second opinion on your dog’s health, visit your veterinarian.
2. Dog’s responsiveness: Responsiveness can be helpful and even life saving. You want to make sure your dog will respond and come when called to prevent any accidents with other hikers or with animals nearby.
3. Know your surroundings and hazards: If you are going on a new trail, leave your dog at home. Some obstacles for us are a breeze yet for your dog may require more energy, and may them to struggle. Always know where you are going beforehand when traveling with dogs. Beware of trails with bridges or paths that may frighten your dog.
4. Have a leash ready: Some trails or parks may require you to keep your dog on a leash at all times for safety reasons. A leash is also needed when you want your dog close by, for example when walking through water or rugged terrain. It is important to use a sturdy leash and harness to prevent falls and keep your pup safe.
5. Hiking Gear: Both your dog and yourself need hiking gear. Make sure your dog is wearing an ID and is microchipped. Be sure to carry a collapsible bowl, poop bags, and plenty of fresh water. Keep your dog hydrated and bring plenty of healthy snacks for energy. The most important items include a first aid and cell phone in case of any emergencies. Make sure you are always prepared!
6. Vaccines, fleas and heartworm medication: Have up to date vaccines and a way to prevent fleas as you may come across fleas or ticks on your hike.
7. Prevent dogs from drinking still water: Don’t drink still water! Still water can cause your dog to get sick from the bacteria and parasites that live in the water. Bring plenty of fresh water!
8. One dog per person: You can easily control a situation when there is only one dog. The one dog per person rules limits stress to the owner and environment.
9. Avoid the heat: Aim to go hiking on cool days to prevent heat exhaustion. Drink plenty of water and keep in the shade.
