Five Dog Breeds That Don’t Shed

It’s easy to love dogs, but it’s difficult to love their shedding. The increased clean-up necessary when owning a dog that sheds can make a prospective owner hesitant to thoroughly consider a particular breeds. That being said, have no fear! There are many dog breeds that don’t shed.

Here are five breeds to consider that won’t shed.

1. Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a friendly, happy-go-lucky breed that bears a striking resemblance to a miniature Poodle. While it requires regular grooming to prevent fur from matting, a Bichon’s coat is hypoallergenic to most people. They make a great choice for a first time dog owner, especially if someone living with the dog could end up being allergic.

2. Coton de Tulear

The Coton de Tulear, also known as the Royal Dog of Madagascar, earned its name from the city of Tulear in Madagascar. They share characteristics with breeds like the Bichon and some terriers (like the Westie), but have a long, smooth coat unlike those breeds. Coton de Tulears does require regular grooming. Brushing their coat several times a week with a special pin brush is a necessity to keep their coat mat-free. This breed is another good choice for new owners because of their temperament.

3. Maltese

The Maltese is a tiny breed with the spirit of a large breed. Another hypoallergenic dog, their coat requires daily brushing, especially if you decide to keep its coat long. Though they might look like puppies for their whole life due to their youthful appearance, this breed is a healthy mixture of gentle and playful, making it an especially good choice for a family dog or companion.

4. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is perhaps less noted than other breeds, but still has many positive characteristics on offer. It is an active breed that will need daily exercise, but adapts well to changing environments and is very good around children. Their wheaten colored coat is composed of only a single layer of hair, though it still needs regularly grooming to prevent mats from forming.

5. Miniature Schnauzer

Miniature Schnauzers make good guard dogs if you’re looking for a candidate that doesn’t share the size of a German Shepherd or even an English Mastiff. They shed very little, though their coat will require at least semi-regular grooming to remain properly maintained. In spite of their protective nature, they adapt well to new environments. Miniature Schnauzers are easy to train, and will stay obedient once trained.
