10 Amazing Movies for Animal Lovers
Whether they are feel good movies or serious tearjerkers, we love watching movies about animals. They make us grateful to have our furry companions by our sides and provide ample entertainment. But what are some of the best animal movies out there?
Here are movies for animal lovers:
- Gordy. This movie was one of my favorites when I was a kid. It’s a dramatic comedy about a piglet (Gordy) that gets separated from his family when they get taken to a slaughterhouse. The piglet takes it upon himself to travel around until he can be reunited with them, touching many lives along the way.
- Charlotte’s Web. Whether you read it when you were a kid–or to your kids– or saw the movie, Charlotte’s Web was a classic. A little girl begs her father not to kill the runt of a litter of pigs, Wilbur, who she raises. Charlotte the spider devises a plan to help save him from being eaten.
- Dolphin Tale. This is a great story about a dolphin who receives an artificial tail and has to learn to swim with the new limb. This is a family film that tells an inspiring tale about the bond between humans and animals.
- Free Willy. When a foster kid gets caught vandalizing a marina, his social worker cuts him a deal and gets him off the hook as long as he helps clean up the marina. While there, he befriends an orca named Willy. This movie is a nice family film to watch with the kids!
- Hachi: A Dog’s Tale. Definitely a tearjerker, this film is another true story about a dog who meets his owner at the train station every day. One day his owner doesn’t show because he’d died, but the dog still comes to meet him every day for the next ten years. This film is a great example of how dogs are man’s best friend.
- Marley & Me. This movie is by far one of my favorites. When a couple is contemplating parenthood, they adopt a puppy to see if they’re ready to have a kid. Marley, the dog, becomes a huge part of the family. All the while, the couple are both writing for newspapers. After a struggle, the wife (played by Jennifer Aniston) finally has two sons, and the bond between human and dog is played upon when Marley grows old and sick and has to be euthanized.
- Fox and the Hound. This list wouldn’t be complete without a few animated films! This film is about friendship, family, and growing up. It seems that all the best animal movies are tearjerkers!
- The Lion King. While the first movie isn’t my favorite (I prefer the sequel) it’s the movie I used to understand the play, Hamlet. It was also a movie I played on repeat when I was a child, despite the sad scene which helps kids understand loss.
- The Secret Life of Pets. One of the newer ones on this list, this movie gives a Toy Story-esque glimpse into what our pets get into when we leave them alone at home. They get into the funniest hijinks and adventures, but at the end of the day they are waiting right back at home for us to love on and take care of.
- Lady and the Tramp. Let’s end this list with a light hearted, fun romance! An unlikely pair shows that anyone can fall in love at any time and be happy as long as they persevere. Plus, the animals in the movie are all really cute, and that spaghetti scene? Perfect!
While not always the cheeriest movies out there, new films are always being created to celebrate mankind’s bond with animals. Big or small, dogs, cats, or even dolphins and pigs can become family members and best friends for life.
